Last year, we shared the story of John Nicholson, who set out to celebrate the life of his brother Bill by visiting all 55 cities of England. His plan was simple but deeply meaningful: travel by train, raise a glass to Bill in a Nicholson pub, or light a candle in each city’s cathedral.
One year on, John has already visited 38 cities and raised an impressive £825 for charity.
When asked to choose a favourite city, he couldn’t narrow it down to just one — but Westminster, Liverpool, Lincoln and Bradford currently sit at the top of his list. He believes Bill’s favourites would likely have been York, Chester and Oxford, all places known for their great shopping, something Bill loved.
Along the way, John has met countless kind and memorable people — the part of the journey he treasures most. In Bradford Cathedral, a lady kindly showed him around, invited him to stay for the organ recital, and even provided a buffet lunch. At Newcastle station, after helping an older lady with her suitcase, she thanked him with a generous £20 donation.
John has travelled solo for almost all of his city visits, with the exception of Manchester, where his sister‑in‑law Janice and friends Sandra and Keith joined him at The Bank pub.
His journey continues this summer. In early July, John and his wife will visit 17 more cities completing his journey. The final stop will be the Etihad Stadium in Manchester — the resting place of Bill’s ashes — bringing this remarkable tribute full circle.
Dr Joanna Tilley, LMRUK’s Operations Director, said: “It has been wonderful to see photos of John in so many cities. I hope he enjoys the final 11 in July. He has raised a fantastic amount of money. A huge thank you to him, his friends, family and everyone who has donated along the way.
