Fundraiser Wendy Forrest has taken part in her second Kiltwalk to raise money for our charity in memory of her husband, Alan.

Wendy and five friends braved one of the hottest days of the year for the picturesque walk from St Andrew’s to Slessor Gardens, Dundee – a total of 20.2 miles.

Money raised in sponsorship is still coming in, but Wendy hopes to have collected at least £2,225 for LMRUK.

Kiltwalkers can raise money for the charity of their choice, but Wendy picked our charity after losing her husband to Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) in August 2022.

She joined five of her closest friends on the Dundee Kiltwalk a year after his death and raised £2,500 for our charity. This year she was also joined by friends who all helped each other make it to the finish line in around seven hours.

Wendy said: “It was a slightly different route to last year – but the same start and finish. This year was much hotter – there wasn’t a cloud in the sky and no shade, but we all made it and I’m really pleased to have raised some more money for the charity.”

Wendy was joined by five friends. She has known some since schooldays and all of them knew her husband Alan and supported her during his illness. Suzy Isles, Lynne Vaughan, Sheena Bell and Morag Johnston and her daughter, Rachel, all completed the walk with Wendy.

Wendy picked LMRUK after searching online for a charity that supports new research into better treatment for patients with the kind of blood cancer that affected Alan.

Kiltwalks are held across Scotland through the spring and summer and another individual fundraiser for LMRUK has been training hard for the Edinburgh event on the 15th of September.

Personal trainer Lee Walkingshaw and up to 15 friends are planning to take part in the 21 mile walk around the city of Edinburgh, starting at Holyrood, home of the Scottish Parliament, and finishing up at the Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium.

Lee has an even bigger challenge in aid of our charity before that – when he tackles the Loch Ness 24 – running a 7km loop around Loch Ness as many times as possible in 24 hours over the weekend of August 24-25. The 2022 winner completed 26 laps – a total of 186km – in the allotted 24 hours.

Lee said: “I’m doing this with my friend Stephen Macdonald. I’ll be sporting a red T-shirt that was sent to me and doing live feeds on the day, trying to encourage people to donate.”  Lee has links, through another good friend, to the impact of blood cancer on families.
