On November 15th, in celebration of World Cord Blood Day 2019, we will join experts from around the globe to educate parents, healthcare professionals and the public about the current uses of cord blood stem cells as well as ground-breaking research in this area of medicine.
The purpose of World Cord Blood Day, a free event open to healthcare professionals and the public, is to educate expectant parents and health professionals about the current applications and research using cord blood stem cells. In France in 1988, Dr. Eliane Gluckman performed the world’s first cord blood transplant saving a young boy suffering from Fanconi Anaemia. Since then, there have been more than 35,000 cord blood transplants worldwide.
Today, cord blood stem cells are used to treat over 80 life-threatening diseases including sickle cell anaemia, thalassaemia, lymphoma and leukaemia. Cord blood also holds great promise in regenerative medicine to potentially treat autism, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, diabetes, stroke, spinal cord injury and much more. Yet, in most births, cord blood continues to be thrown away as medical waste.
As an Official Participant in World Cord Blood Day 2019, we will be playing an important role in advancing cord blood education and awareness.
